Khidmat: Please God, I wish...

If an angel appeared before me and said "O momin, Allah Subhanahu has granted you one wish", I would surely answer, "Please God, I wish that my Moula Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin Saheb (TUS), who shows the ultimate selfless love for mumineen every day, should live until the day of Qayamat."

What greater reward is there for a momin than to live a long life in the khidmat of Aqamoula (TUS). I remember clearly, I was sitting inside the masjid in Surat during last Ashara. The waez had not started, and Aqamoula (TUS) was hearing arzis and taking care of the hundred other things that normally precede the start of the waez.

My eyes fell on this person, who was walking towards the center in front of the takhat. As he gingerly made his way between the seated crowd, I could see that he was quite old. I would have guessed that he was a Yemeni shaikhsaheb. Even though he did not have far to go, each step he took was laborious, shaky, slow. Finally, he made it, coming directly in front of Aqamoula (TUS), about fifteen feet away, He bowed low, perfoming the tasleem. The green, frilled, oblong fan, was handed to him by the Miasaheb. Holding the fan in his right hand, he raised it up high, then forcefully brought it down straight in front of him to create a cool breeze towards Moula.

Scarcely had he performed this khidmat for a minute or two, the Miasaheb started to take back the fan. Meekly, the shaikhsaheb began to comply. I say started to, because, in that instant, amidst the chaos that surrounds the takhat, Aqamoula (TUS), who is always keenly aware of everything that is happening around him, raised his hand and gestured to the Miasaheb to let the old gentleman continue to fan. The shaikhsaheb, with renewed vigor, kept up the activity for a full five more minutes. As strenuous as this appeared to be, he continued, unflinching and without pause. Finally, it was another person's turn.

Again bowing low, he performed the tasleem and slowly walked back to his jagah. I sat transfixed, watching this whole event. It evoked powerful emotions in me; love, respect, admiration, and yes, a bit of envy. But most of all, I felt I had witnessed another Shaan of our Moula. I realized that when Aqamoula (TUS) tells us he will take our hands and lead us to Heaven, he cares about each one of us.

And so if the angel reappeared and said, "O momin, Allah Subhanahu has granted you a second wish", I would reply, "Please God, I wish to live to be ninety years old, standing before my Moula Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin Saheb (TUS), during Ashara ayyam, performing the khidmat of the fan for my Moula."
